The additional bracing required to maintain chassis stiffness added 154 pounds to the 944S2 cabriolet, but maximum performance was never the cars intended mission. HISTORY OF THE PORSCHE 944The Porsche 944 was introduced to the market in 1982 and was based on Porsche’s successful 924 platform which featured a front engine and rear wheel drive layout. Porsche mounted the transaxle in the rear, providing a near perfect 50/50 weight distribution which made 944 one of the best handling cars of its era. The four cylinder engine featured revolutionary counter rotating balance shafts that gave the engine the smoothness of a six cylinder. 1989 saw the introduction of the 944 S2 powered by an enhanced 3.0 liter 16-valve engine with dual overhead camshafts that produced over 200hp. 0-60 time was under 7 seconds and top speed was in excess of 150mph. The S2 was the first 944 to offer a cabriolet with special body work constructed in Weinsberg, Germany. The 944 saw many progressions in its nine year run with the most advanced model being the S2, introduced in 1982. At the heart of the S2 was a 3.0 liter 4 cylinder naturally aspirated engine that produce 208 horsepower, offered an excellent torque curve and was capable of nearly 150 mph. Styling cues for the S2 was a new integrated front bumper and a new tail end treatment. Also, the S2 model featured a Cabriolet configuration available for the first time in the 944 line up. Once again, Porsche had managed to creat a desirable open-top variant of its popular road-going sports car.
